Teeth that don't come together properly when biting causes pressure distribution in the mouth. In order to eliminate and relieve that pressure, an occlusal adjustment (or bite adjustment) is done. The procedure causes little to no discomfot at all. The adjustment is made by using a fine filing stone on the dental drill.
Sometimes in addition to the bite adjustment, removal occlusal guards (mouthpieces) can be fabricated to custom fit to your mouth. This helps protect the tooth surfaces and relax the jaw/muscles.
The following signs and symptoms may indicate a need for occlusal adjustments:
- loose or shifting teeth
- heavy grinding or clenching
- sensitive teeth
- painful jaw when waking up in the morning
