The chewing surfaces on your back teeth have tiny grooves and pits that are very difficult to clean because they are too narrow for your toothbrush bristles to get into them. Bacteria and food particles can collect in these grooves and pits, causing cavities.
A sealant is a clear, thin material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars). Sealants help protect harmful bacteria from harboring in those grooves by forming a smooth surface over the tooth, making it easier to keep clean through daily oral hygiene.
Sealants are a preventative measure and are usually recommended for cavity-prone individuals (ie: kids that have developing six and twelve year molar teeth).
Please ask us for further information during your hygiene visit. You or your child may be a perfect candidate for sealants.
