Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a common problem. Periodontal disease is today's #1 cause of tooth loss among American adults and has been related to other systemic health issues including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Most patients may experience tenderness and soft gums, but without the proper periodontal care, periodontitis can lead to loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth ultimately leading to loss of the teeth themselves.
Periodontitis can be caused by a number of factors, including poor oral hygiene, smoking, and conditions that compromise the immune system, such as diabetes. The following symptoms may indicate a need for periodontal care:
- swelling gums
- bleeding or pain after brushing or flossing
- persistent bad breath
- loose teeth
During your routine hygiene examination, we will assess the severity of gum disease and determine the right course of periodontal care. Please let us know if you have any questions. We would be happy to hear from you!
