What are veneers?
Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain that fit over the front surface of your teeth. Together, each individually placed veneer creates a more uniform appearance for your whole smile. Veneers are custom-fit to your teeth and are a viable solution for many common cosmetic dental issues, including:
- Unevenly spaced teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Misaligned teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are smaller than adjacent ones
- Deeply stained teeth
- Chipped or fractured teeth
Veneers are wafer-thin, but they still add extra support to each tooth. They’re also stain-resistant and become a permanent part of your new, improved smile.
What is the procedure for placing veneers?
Dr. Ocharoen can usually prepare your teeth and place your veneers in two dental visits. To prepare your teeth, it’s necessary to first remove a thin layer of your enamel so the veneer can fit properly over each tooth. The process of preparing your teeth and applying the veneers isn’t painful, but anesthetic is available if you’re concerned.
Once your custom veneers are created in the lab from the impressions Dr. Ocharoen makes at your initial visit, she permanently places each veneer on your teeth. Before doing so, Dr. Ocharoen cleans your teeth thoroughly then applies a special adhesive and cement to bond the porcelain shell to each tooth. She uses a special light to help the cement harden under the veneer.
Dr. Ocharoen removes any excess material then polishes the veneers before you’re ready to go. After your appointment, you’re ready to show your new, improved smile to the world.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Traditional porcelain veneers last 10-15 years, as long as you take good care of your teeth. It helps to take some precautions to protect your veneers from chipping or cracking. For example, don’t chew on pencils or other hard objects, and don’t use your teeth to open packages.
It’s also a good idea to wear a mouthguard when you play sports to protect your veneers and your teeth from injury.
